What State Has The Best Outdoor Activities

What State Has The Best Outdoor Activities – Colorado is one of the best states in the entire country for outdoor activities. Whatever you’re looking for, this state has you covered. And when it comes to hiking in Colorado – it’s truly an otherworldly experience. Whether you want to walk on hot summer days or enjoy the hiking trails in Colorado when the leaves change colors in the fall, this state promises a trip you’ll never forget.

Growing disease is no joke. If you are from a hilly state, you will have a much easier time than those from sea level. If you’re not used to being in the air for a mile (and sometimes more), take your time to acclimate, or you’ll be in for a rough time.

What State Has The Best Outdoor Activities

Yes, every hiking guide for any place says to bring layers. Seriously, Colorado weather changes your mind like an undeclared college student. The last time I was in Colorado, it was 92 one day and snowing the next. no joke

If you’re taking advantage of the summer months to hike in Colorado, you’ll want to be aware of afternoon thunderstorms. Colorado is notorious for afternoon showers in the summer, so never hit the trail without a raincoat.

Another obvious one, but it should be mentioned. Colorado is hot and dry in the summer, and with the altitude gained while hiking, you’ll need more water than you need. Getting dizzy and dehydrated is a recipe for ending the hike much sooner than you’d like. Make sure you are always well hydrated or you will get altitude sickness (another one I have personally encountered).

In a state synonymous with the outdoors, it would be impossible to construct a definitive guide to the best hikes around. There’s no wrong way here, but if you’re looking for inspiration, be sure to visit these six trails.

Emerald Lake is easily accessible from most trails in Rocky Mountain National Park. You’ll likely be surrounded by new friends on this hike, but braving the crowds is totally worth it. On the way to the turnaround point at Emerald Lake you’ll get views of two lakes (three if you count Bear Lake at the trailhead). If you’re bringing camera gear, this is one of the best hikes to set up for some shots at the halfway point.

Reasons Greenstone Is Nature’s Home Town

While most people can complete this hike in less than two hours, it’s encouraged to allow more time than that to stay at the lakes you’ll see along the trail—spend at least some time at Emerald Lake.

If peak Rocky Mountain season crowds don’t sound like your cup of tea, head south from Rocky Mountain National Park toward Granby, Colorado. Hiking in Colorado is more than just the Rocky Mountains! Opting for trails outside the national park is also a good plan for dog owners, as the national park is not pet friendly.

Doe Creek Loop is a challenge with four different climbs, but the views you’re greeted with more than make up for your efforts. You will enjoy the lake view on the way up, with a view of the meadows as you go to the other side.

It’s definitely one of the more challenging trails in the national park, but it’s well worth it for the avid hiker. If you’re looking for a challenging hike to check off your Rocky Mountain bucket list, Sky Pond is as difficult as it is beautiful.

Prepare for elevation as this trail starts at over 9,000 feet. The summit of this trail is around 11,000 feet, so expect snow in the warmer months and pack your gear accordingly. Crampons and poles aren’t usually necessary if you hike past June, although they’re still good to pack with you in late spring and early summer.

If you’re flying into Grand Junction instead of Denver, the Palisade Rim Trail will be the most convenient place to start your Colorado hiking trip. Located between Colorado National Monument and Grand Mesa National Forest, this hike exemplifies the best of western Colorado.

If you want to enjoy this state’s rich wilderness, Palisade is an ideal place to start. Note that temperatures can really rise in the warmer months, so bring plenty of water and a hat if you’re hiking in the heat of the day.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison is often glossed over in favor of the Rocky Mountains or Mesa Verde National Park, but shouldn’t be missed. This is one of the most popular hikes in this little-known national park, so you’ll likely run into other visitors on this short hike.

You’ll see some ups and downs in this track, but it’s one of the best on the list. If you have time to explore the entire state of Colorado, starting here is a great way to get your feet under and acclimated to the altitude.

This is probably the hardest hike on this list, although ironically, it’s also one of the lower elevations (relative to Colorado, of course). With a summit of nearly 8,500 feet, it may seem like a challenge compared to other Colorado hikes, but with nearly 2,000 feet of elevation gained in about a mile, it’s not for the faint of heart.

However, there are many things that make the walk worth it. After the first mile, the next three miles are a gradual downhill of incredible scenery. The bragging rights you get at the end won’t hurt either. If you’re already near Garden of the Gods (which is a must), consider a short trip to this part of Pike National Forest!

Hope this list has inspired your next hike! Choosing the best options for hiking in Colorado is almost impossible. In a place full of outdoor experiences, you can choose a new hike every day and still have plenty left to see in a lifetime. The hiking trails in Colorado are second to none, so you really want to take your time and enjoy it.
