If your flight is from another continent, consider booking a flight to a connecting city such as London, Berlin or Paris. Even if it’s not on your list, you’ll be able to get a flight with one of Europe’s low-cost airlines and save a lot.

In Italy, there are many famous hotel chains that offer many advantages, but at an insane price. Luckily for backpackers, there are plenty of budget B&Bs (family-run B&Bs) and budget hotels (use my Booking discount code to save even more). You may also consider staying at monasteries or other religious sites. These places are very convenient, affordable and often have a great location!
For example, I stayed at the Istituto Santa Giuliana Falconieri in Rome, which is right next to Piazza Navona in the historic part of the city; one of the best areas of Rome for travelers. Location is very important and you MUST check it before ordering. Some hostels may offer prices that are too good to be true, but may be located away from all the tourist attractions.

You don’t need to visit Italy in late spring or summer when there are many tourists. Visit between October and June and even in winter. First, you want to avoid holiday prices and higher-than-average air fares. In addition, you will get a more authentic view of Italy and the everyday life of Italians when there are fewer tourists around.
