It’s easy to find great childcare options if both parents work and even if they don’t. Indonesian nannies are accustomed to working with immigrant families and will respond to your wishes and needs without hesitation. Nannies will be very attached to your children and will be your go-to person when you need help translating something or just managing life in Jakarta.
There is a wide variety of schools in Jakarta. From international schools to national “Plus” schools, the biggest challenge will be deciding which program fits your children’s and family’s needs. You can decide which school to send your children to according to the curriculum your children are in, and you can transfer school records when you move to another country.
International schools are the best options for families who know they will be in Jakarta for a while. The course followed is easily validated and can be transferred to other international schools in different countries or even “at home” wherever. Most of the staff at the international school, from the principal to the teachers, are expatriate and their mother tongue is English, German or French. Some of the most popular international schools are Jakarta International School, British International School, Australian International School and Lycee International Français de Jakarta.
Indonesian National “plus” schools are local schools that offer an international curriculum and use English as the language of instruction. These schools are very popular with more affluent Indonesians and you will often find children of politicians and other prominent people enrolled in these schools. They offer a great alternative and a very competitive education option for long-term expats in Jakarta and those whose companies cannot afford the cost of education as they are not as expensive as international schools. Two of the best known “plus” national schools are Sekolah Pelita Harapan (SPH) and Springfield International Curriculum School.

The school you choose will most likely determine the area where you want to find accommodation. While the entertainment options may differ from those in your home country, it’s not hard to keep the kids busy and entertained. Visiting shopping malls is a favorite pastime for Indonesians and expats. The malls in Jakarta are huge up to 8 floors full of food, entertainment and shopping. Shopping malls are great places to find indoor entertainment options for kids, as they have great indoor playgrounds, bowling alleys, karaoke rooms, and family-friendly movie theaters. You’ll even find Ferris wheels, carousels, water parks, and small roller coasters in malls.
Sunday brunch is a favorite pastime for Indonesians, and the car-free Sunday is one of the best options for biking or cruising Jakarta’s main streets. Many children’s shows, such as Disney on Ice, are usually available, and movie tickets are inexpensive, and you can often find the latest blockbuster movies.
Outdoor parks do not really exist in Jakarta. However, if you really want to take the kids out there are two good alternatives. Playparq and Playground in Kemang offer outdoor playgrounds and a water playground where children of all ages enjoy.
Green Nature Escape From Jakarta
Bayside, Ancol Resort will provide a full day for children and adults. In Ancol, you’ll find a water park, a Sea World, a beachfront golf course, and two amusement parks. Even though the conditions are not like those of international amusement parks, Ancol is a great option to keep the kids entertained. To the east of Jakarta you can find Taman Mini, a cultural park that showcases all aspects of everyday life in Indonesia encapsulated in separate pavilions.
If you’re willing to go a little further, the options become endless. Taman Safari is a driving safari where you can see more than 2,500 animals in their natural habitat. You can feed them, pet them and camp in the park. If you want to teach your kids about nature, the tea plantations and strawberry farms in Bandung are a great option. Finally, the Bogor Botanical Gardens and Zoo provides a nice respite from the pollution and hustle and bustle of Big Durian.
With so many different groups and associations based in Jakarta, it’s easy to find your niche and community. The American Women’s Association provides helpful information for newcomers, and their bimonthly playgroup is a great place to socialize and interact with other parents. The Australian and New Zealand Association has one of the friendliest and largest playgroups in Jakarta, and the British Women’s Association also hosts a playgroup for toddlers and preschoolers. The Ibero-American Association hosts two different Spanish game groups; one for babies and toddlers and one for 3 years and older.
Jakarta is a city going through many growing pains. Infrastructure has not been able to keep up with the huge growth spurt it has seen in recent years, and it is evident in the construction quality of various systems, from highways to sewers.
