Outdoor Kid Friendly Games – Parents, you can stop the “I’m bored” talk with our list of 35 games for families to play this summer. 24 outdoor summer games and 11 indoor games for rainy days.

We have outdoor games for children of all ages. In fact, I can totally see some of these games, like Human Hungry Hippos, Kerplunk, Bowling, and especially Warning Tape Maze.

I made these simple DIY water target games for a family event in the summer of 2012 before I started this blog. I saw the idea on Pinterest but can’t seem to find the post now. This is a simple and inexpensive DIY project. You will need sails, duck tape and pool noodles. We used badminton net poles to wrap around a large tarp target. To make it more fun, we used more pool noodles as throwing spears along with water balloons to throw. We also covered the tarp with dish soap and sprayed water next to it.

You can also play some outdoor games inside the house, such as Roll a Can with No Hands, The Large Tic Tac Toe Game, Cloth Pick Nick Games, and even Kerplunk Games.

We’ve got 11 games for the whole family for those rainy summer days when the kids are out of school.

Have you ever tried opening a present with gloves on? Me too, but I think it would be so much fun to play this game at our family’s Christmas party this year!

We played this Christmas Light Scavenger Hunt as a prelude to our annual family Christmas party (to get the excitement started early) and it was a huge hit! If your family is competitive in any way, this will be a lot of excitement!

Mood, Food and Games is a collection of ideas for last-minute Valentine’s Day dates with someone you love. When the days are long and warm, it’s time to bring the games outside! We’ve tried to put some learning into these ideas for outdoor fun with kids from toddlers to teenagers.

Pom Pom water game. Fill an old bathtub (from a large Tupperware to a kitchen bowl) with water and a few handfuls of colorful pom poms. Let the pom-poms soak up water like a sponge (and if you don’t have pom-poms, use a real sponge!) and kids can squeeze the water out, squeeze them together, and do other great sensory activities.

Water the plants from the watering can. Or, if you don’t have a watering can, use an old yogurt container or mason jar. You’d be pleasantly surprised how long the kids can spend walking around the yard, deciding which plants are “thirsty” and rationing water throughout the garden.

Human Ring Toss Game

Scoop and dump dirt. Another activity with minimal preparation, all you need is a bucket and shovel or a drinking cup. Find a dirt spot in the garden (of course sandboxes work great too) and let the little ones get as dirty as they want.

Ring around Rosie. Hold hands (wash first of course) and sing this nursery rhyme until you all are! Autumn! Below! And then do it again!

Chalk paper. For developing fine motor skills and literacy, this outdoor game is great fun and only requires two things; A sprayer filled with chalk and water. Write the letters of the alphabet (or numbers) down the street, hand your child a spray bottle and have them “erase” each letter as you say by spraying it with water!

Outdoor Kid Friendly Games

Backyard bug hunt. or dinosaurs! Or any plastic set of animals you might have in your toy chest. Ask an older sibling to hide, or a caregiver can do it, and let the fun begin! Play the “Hot or Cold” game to get hints on where to place the creatures and collect them in your pocket or basket. Who will get the most?

Beach Ball Relay Race {fun Outdoor Game!}

Paint with water. Break out the painting supplies – paint rollers and bowls work great – but keep the paint in stock! Instead, fill containers with water and let the kids use a variety of brushes to paint on the driveway, grass, patio furniture, or whatever they choose. Older children can practice letters and numbers with brushes.

Outdoor scavenger. Depending on the age, you can make your own list of things for the kids to find, or younger kids can just point to interesting things they see in the backyard (nature related) and say them out loud or draw them. Check out this natural laundry detergent scavenger hunt.

Board game. The possibilities are endless here! Practice handwriting, literacy or math. Play Pictionary! Draw a game of hopscotch and bring out the Wiggles. Play Tic Tac Toe or Hangman or draw a picture of your whole family!

Rock spelling. Have fun collecting small, smooth stones that fit in a child’s palm. Write a letter on each rock (painters are great and great for many projects) and say different words. Or use pebbles and arrange them to form capital letters.

Kid Friendly Water Activities For Outdoor Summer Fun

Paint with nature. Use leaves, branches and blades of grass as brushes and water as paint! Kids will be able to paint garden furniture, patios, even the sides of the house! Depending on the surface, water will be easier or harder to see. Let’s talk about why that might be!

Rock Tic Tac Toe. Paint X’s and O’s on the smooth rocks, draw a grid with chalk and have fun! For extra involvement, collect oversized rocks and play a giant game.

Erupting volcano. Learn about chemical reactions. Find a good digging spot in the garden, make a small ‘mountain’ and dig a hole and place a plastic (I think Solo) cup inside so the rim is level with the top of the mountain. Add a few tablespoons of baking soda. In a separate container, mix about half a cup of vinegar with food coloring (orange for the lava!) and pour it into the cups for some explosive fun!

Outdoor Kid Friendly Games

Wall Ball Vocab. Start with a category, such as animals, and each time the ball is returned the player must come up with a word that matches that category. “Lion!” “A tiger!” “Bear!” …”Oh no!” If the player can’t think of anything, go to the next category. Add a level of challenge by replacing simple categories with nouns, adjectives, pronouns, puns, similes, synonyms, antonyms, or anything appropriate for the age group.

Kids Party Games Ideas For Indoor And Outdoor Parties

Nature magazine. It’s a great opportunity for observational drawing and quiet time. Children can quietly observe their surroundings and try to paint what they see. They can also use a journal to record thoughts and feelings and help process what is happening around the world.

Part is sticking. Gather several sticks of somewhat similar sizes and separate them to make “halves,” “thirds,” and so on. Put them together in different configurations and add the fractions together. Do they always make it perfect? why or why not

Backyard Olympics. Take obstacle courses to the next level using whatever you have on hand and fill your yard with games and events inspired by the Olympics! Build a bean bag throwing station, water bucket relay, or beam using 2x4s in the garage. Pop balloons for a balloon pop event, form teams for a wheelie race, and finish the dodgeball game. Fun for everyone!

Have a picnic Ask the older children to prepare lunch for the whole family (don’t forget to wash your hands!), and set up a blanket and other supplies outside. Take time away from the screen, join in and chat about how everyone is doing. What did everyone learn or try something new today?

Giant Four In A Row Connect Game For Kids & Adults Indoor/outdoor Game

Pitch a tent Break the musty tent out of the garage (and air it out!) and let the older kids figure out how to set it up without adult help! Then bring in some pillows and blankets and you have a new cozy place and reading corner for the family.
