In 2005, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong came up with the idea of building a large park along the bay. This park has been designed as a place of relaxation as well as the visiting card of Singapore. In January 2006, an international competition for the best project for Gardens by the Bay was announced, in which 170 companies from 25 countries participated. In September of that year, the jury announced the winners: Grant Associates for the Bay South Garden and Gustafson Porter for the Bay East Garden. The decision to build a central park was taken later.
Construction of the gardens began in 2007, and the grand opening of Gardens by the Bay took place four years later – in October 2011. Bay East Gardens was used to attract competitions at the Youth Olympic Games in August 2010, and was opened before the other gardens.
For the realization of this architectural landscape project, 1035 million dollars were allocated, while the annual operating expenditure reached more than 50 million dollars.
Today the park “Gardens by the Bay” is very popular, 6-9 million people visit it every year. The park was awarded various awards including “World Building of the Year” in 2012.

Along the bay are two innovative greenhouses, believed to be among the largest in the world. The special feature of these greenhouses are the large glass roofs without any additional internal supports.
According to Guinness World Records 2015, the Flower Dome is the largest glass greenhouse in the world. More than 40 sculptures from around the world have been installed in Gardens by the Bay, which complete the overall concept of the project.
