Fun Outdoor Toys For 12 Year Olds – My sons are growing up. It also seems funny to say because we all get older every day, but I feel it a little more as my boys go from younger preschoolers and elementary schoolers to older kids. I always like to encourage more time outdoors during the summer, so I thought I’d share some outdoor toys for older kids that we personally enjoy and have worked well for us as a family.

Fun Outdoor Toys For 12 Year Olds
My sons love to ride bikes. Our favorite bikes were Schwinn bikes. We absolutely love the Schwinn bike with Smart Start that our kids learned to ride and my 8 year old is still learning to ride. The frames on the Schwinn bikes are lighter, the pedals are slightly forward, and we’ve made them easier for our boys to learn. We love their bikes, and whether your child is learning to ride a bike or already knows how to ride a bike, we think they’re great bikes for kids.
Outdoor Summer Toys That Are Crazy Fun
My boys love a challenge. We use small cones to set up obstacles for passing, passing a football, etc. These are cheap and a lot of fun.
Last summer we added this ninja warrior course to our arsenal of outdoor toys. The boys left the play complex we loved behind when we moved, so we decided to try a new climb that would be more challenging. You have to make sure the loose line is very tight so it takes a while to set up but my boys spent hours on it this past summer and I felt it held up well.
It might sound strange, but hear me out… When it gets dark in the summer and we spend a cozy evening at home with our friends, children love to run around with lights. I make sure to keep the cheap ones on hand so they don’t ruin the good ones we have. I also give them plenty of warnings about the importance of not flashing people in the eye.
It wasn’t even on my radar until we moved into our new neighborhood last year. All the children were riding scooters, so my boys also asked a bit. For an 8-year-old, it’s a micro-maxi scooter, and for an 11-year-old, it’s a Mongoose Force 3.0. If your child is younger, go with the micro ball, but if they are older and can balance, the mongoose would be fine. It is probably the last year for the 8-year-old in micro.

There are many versions of this. We used to have a big inflatable water slide, but our boys have outgrown it. These days they have a lot of fun running and sliding on the Slip n Slide head.
If you have a paved road, I can’t recommend the loop. We played basketball for hours and just talked while shooting. You don’t have to spend a ton to get a good one either. This basketball hoop has worked well for us for several years and even worked last year.
Mom got Spikeball for the boys and it’s fun to play together. I can see this being something that boys will continue to love as they get older. It requires good coordination, so I would say it is for children aged 10 and up.
So now we have quite a few. The first targets we received were portable targets. I think it’s fine if you really want something portable or are on a budget, but we’ve had one for a while and one of them broke. Also…

I know you probably think the sidewalk is for kids, but honestly, my boys still use it. We have them draw things on the driveway, we use it to mark basketball lines, and we draw random obstacle courses on the road for them to run or run through.

Edison has two fun cars that he can drive and they are so much fun! What I love about this jeep is that it also has a remote control for parents so you can always be sure they are safe. We have a remote control and it’s a lot of fun.
I have this lovely little chair that the kids can sit on by our pool. I saw a similar set up chair on our recent trip to Mexico and have been eyeing it ever since! I knew we needed it for our house, it’s so cute! The kids love hanging out here when we’re in the pool and I love that it has a little canopy over it.

We’ve had it since Edison was 22 months old. It’s so much fun and he plays with it all the time. You may need to buy an extra ball (we always seem to lose ours) but this is a fun toy for kids that can be used indoors or outdoors.
There is something similar for Edison. He uses it but prefers his bike even when we leave the house. It’s a scooter that all kids will love and it’s easy to use. It has glow-in-the-dark LED lights that light up when you accelerate. It comes in 4 different colors and has an adjustable T-bar to fit as your children grow.
I bought this water table for Lucy and she is seriously into it! Perfect for those days when you need a bit of fun without wearing all our pool gear and fun for the summer.
