Do you see sunlight? I also. From the first day of spring to the last day of school, my heart goes out to outdoor activities for kids. Of course I am a child of the 80s. It’s worth opening the garage door and asking the kids to come back at sunset.

But the truth is, with babies and preschoolers, days are not so easy. I remember having young children and wondering how we were going to make it to the bedroom.

Choose a letter and play it! We also have fond memories of playing the chalk game outside. It’s like a board game where you can walk. Wow. Crazy, right?

Another easy and breezy (I couldn’t help myself) outdoor activity is rock painting. Some days we have to go rock hunting. The next step is to paint them. Or, if you want sensory play, try Bear Soup Sensory Play. How will I repay the joy these bears bring my children?! They are my favorite so far and I have my eight year old playing with them. Bring the bears outside for an outdoor water bowl. bear soup? Don’t be offended if I do!

Getting Kids Outside

You know what else I tried? Bringing the indoor toys outside and it was a big hit. I did this for outdoor tracks water play. The boys tried to race cars and tried to dunk them in buckets. (Always supervise young children around water).

Of course, I failed to mention the musical scavenger hunt. A musical scavenger hunt is a great way to get outside and get moving. Play your favorite song. If he stops – run and get something of the color you stopped. It’s great fun for all ages.

If you want to add exposed math, use shapes and shaving cream. We released our 3D shapes and created new sculptures. It’s a great morning workout before the sun gets too hot. Bring everyone (and everything) down when it’s hot.

If shaving cream is your jam, try shaving cream pups. This sensory box is great for when kids bury puppies and clean them with a water bottle.

If your child has missed shaving cream (although who does?!) and wants a little extra sensory fun, try Nature Murals. This is a two-step outdoor activity. First, collect the items outside. Next, glue them to a large piece of wood or cardboard. A fun way to strengthen little hands, lie and incorporate creativity.

One of my favorite fall items is Pumpkin Balance. Can you balance a mini pumpkin on your head? It’s more complicated than it sounds – but we all laughed our heads off when it took time for the meal to be ready.

I can’t even mention pumpkins without including leaf painting. I use butcher paper from home improvement stores for exterior painting. Draw what your child likes, the rest is up to him. Let your toddler and preschooler mix colors while coloring.
