I sipped my coffee and closed my eyes as I tried to think of some fun things to keep my toddler and preschooler busy in the morning. Coffee couldn’t get in fast enough.

Rainy Day Activities For Preschoolers (indoor And Out)

Here, I’ve rounded up my favorite activities for toddlers and preschoolers, including crafts, quiet games, educational activities, indoor attractions, fine motor practice, a list of over 100 kids’ activities, free printables, and more.

My kids can’t get enough arts and crafts projects. Honestly, neither did I as a kid. I watched Mister dress up like a kid and dreamed of creating all the fun crafts he made. Just hearing the sound of her scissors cutting through construction paper made me smile. Yes! Yes, I just admitted. 🙂

For this activity you will need some old toilet paper rolls, scissors and markers. You pre-cut the rollers in half to make ‘hair’.

I use the free printable Scissors Safety Poster to talk to my kids about what we cut and what we don’t cut. It worked really well. You can get it here.

Places To Play Inside On A Rainy Day

I used to be a first grade teacher, so there’s a part of my brain that has both fun and educational activities that I just can’t turn off. Here is a list of some of our favorites that will be perfect for the little ones on a rainy day.

With just a bubble bath and a water base, you can make five fun preschool activity ideas to explore bubble bath. Children’s activities include art, play, sensory, literacy and science.

To make a bubble bath base that can be used for each of the following activities, you will need to add 3 tablespoons of bubble bath to 1/4 cup of water and liquid watercolor (or food coloring).

Then use the mixer on the highest setting for 1-2 minutes. After a minute, stir the mixture to mix the water underneath. Continue mixing until a thick foam forms.

With three levels of difficulty, your preschooler can practice their number skills with slime. For these slime number games you will need printable slime count number game boards, slime, 2 dice and a dry erase marker.

This is a fun sensory and writing skills activity. Essentially, you teach children to write by first creating the lines needed to make the letters.

They can practice these lines using the free printable pre-writing practice. They then use a cotton swab to trace the lines of the printable template onto the bag.

It’s good to get out and go somewhere if you’re feeling a little fuzzy. So I’ve put together a list of my favorite indoor activities for preschoolers.

Children’s fine motor skills revolve around using their hands. Mastering fine motor skills allows your child to independently perform smaller physical tasks, such as washing hands, zipping up a coat, or tying shoes. Fine motor skills also include the ability to master hand-eye coordination.

Bubble Painting With Straws

The indoor activities are great for all ages this time of year. But babies seem to be especially enthusiastic and need extra attention.

Each of these indoor activities for kids is easy to do. Easy to set up. It uses materials that you might already have on hand (all of which are fairly common items).

Get out of the cardboard boxes and create! Let the imagination run wild. A box can be anything: a train, car ramps, an airplane, a house.

Glue the doorframe and throw some newspaper (or cotton balls) over the top to see if it sticks. A great activity for gross motor practice.

Shaving cream is a great sensory activity that kids love. Pour some into the pan and let them enjoy it. Add food coloring if desired. You can put them on an old shirt and maybe a towel too. It gets messy (you can also keep the messy game clean, I have 10 ways).

Bowl inside! Take one of the children’s balls. Configure various items for pins. Most things will work for them, soda bottles, a tube of paper towel or toilet paper too.

Create a necklace, baby style. Use a piece of string (a shoelace works well because of the stiff end) and something to tie it with. Big beads would be great. But other items like a straw or large noodles will also work. This will be a great motor activity.

Dig up the newspaper from the trash can and let the ball play it. You can add a dartboard to the mix with this indoor kids activity and also practice counting. All gross motor practice.

Here is an easy and clean sensory activity. Pour some hair gel (lotion will work too) into the bag and seal it. Add some craft items to the mix for some fun too.

Draw a line on the floor in different shapes (zig zag, curved or straight) and ask the child to walk along it, trying to balance as best they can. They can do it forward, but what about going backwards? Another fantastic gross motor activity that can be done indoors.

Have your child place pom poms in the opening of a small bottle or cut a small hole in a container. Pom poms and other small objects can be used for fine motor skills, but always be careful around young children and supervise them closely.

An alternative to modeling clay (although it’s great, sometimes it’s fun to play with something else) is cloud putty. The texture is great and kids love exploring it.
