However, using the above tips, I think you can travel around Japan on 7,000-10,000 JPY per day. Japan should not buy more than that per day if you are not different. This means more bus rides, (very) less sushi, more cooking, more sightseeing, and the occasional one-night Couchsurfing (or other free lodging).
I have seen many tourists in Japan travel cheaply. They do, and maybe – but you’ll never quit your sushi addiction if you go this route.
For me, budget travel is about value travel. Japan won’t be as cheap a trip as Southeast Asia, but Japan has plenty of ways to visit on a budget. Japan won’t cost you $20 USD a day, but you don’t need to spend hundreds either.
