In the PNW, I like light raincoats to be breathable, so we can layer them over a jacket when it’s cold and wet, or over a shirt when it’s warm and wet. In some cooler or less humid climates, a thick polyurethane jacket or padded raincoat is best. Or a completely waterproof suction, especially if they like small classes to be done in kindergarten. We already bought a Buff head to fit under our son’s helmet in cold weather. A normal beanie is too thick, and otherwise he would be very angry with the wind in his ears. It’s thin, but keeps their ears warm. Since then, we have considered it as a tourist destination. Consider thin gloves. We have the best fleece wheel gloves from Polarn O Pyret. If you can get a 40-50% wool blend, it helps keep hands wet! Note: gloves do not make us up to two years. A friend wants a 3 pack of gloves from Target because she keeps losing gloves! We have woolen gloves, which are nice, because when they get wet they stay cool. We live in Portland, we get snow a few times a year, and we go snowshoeing once an hour. So we don’t need snow, like we did when we lived in Bend, Oregon or Buffalo, New York. Babies and toddlers are better off with bibs and transition to snow pants as they get older. Target has a great basic snow bib that works well. If you live in the rain, rain, or you don’t have the time or money to get a refrigerator, I would invest in rain paint. Then put it underneath to keep your child warm. Shop is in use! Snowshoes in areas that don’t get a lot of snow are often only available for a couple in the winter before kids go to a new size. So try to get a gently used pair. Otherwise, Sorel has great winter boots, and I found some great boots at Target on sale. Nordstrom Rack online is a great place to buy designer shoes at great prices. And fyi, rain boots too

Because they work like snowshoes, they get cold quickly. So your child will be very happy with snowshoes. The only time we break out of rain boots is when we’re visiting family and just looking for a base for a short snow-play weekend and such. turned into ice cubes. Waterproof gloves or gloves for playing in the snow. In Portland, we only use snow gloves a few times a year. Gloves usually last for two years or more or they just pull it. Burton, North Face and Black Diamond are the best brands for gloves and snow mittens. Price: REI $30+ or Backcountry $25+
Sunglasses are great for keeping kids warm and happy whether it’s snowing or windy. Great for skating, even if your child isn’t using it for skiing or snowboarding! Retail: REI $24+, Amazon $14+
I usually do a quick inventory of our winter gear in August or September. It’s a great time to review your gear and sizes from last year and start planning what you’ll need for this season! Depending on where you live, we only need a few months to get one of these tools. Plus, REI and Patagonia have big sales around Labor Day and the holidays. So now is the perfect time to get high quality “last year’s” colors at cheap prices. In addition, brands like H&M and Target’s Cat & Jack often sell out of their sizes and styles and are trendy.
